The London Suede (No Images)

June 13th, 2009 in Music

As far as you and I are concerned, Suede changed the rules of pop music and everyone else just followed. When they formed around 1991, “independent” music was something to be sidelined not celebrated – bands released EPs and gazed at their feet and being successful didn’t come into it. Now, three million album sales later (including 5 top Ten hits off the last album), Suede have redefined the “left-field”and called it mainstream. Without them I doubt whether bands like Oasis or Blur would existing quite the same way that they do today. Indeed, whilst they may have spawned/ spurned “Britpop” (horrible term), their cultural impact is of a far greater significance: they represent nothing more or less than the voice of disaffected youth.

Starsailor (Photo Gallery)

For a band often lambasted as shrinking violets, Starsailor have kept some pretty loose and unexpected company since they announced their arrival in 2001 with the majestic ‘Love Is Here.’ Then, as 19 year olds straight out of music college in Wigan, they found themselves hurled into the world of Heavenly Recordings – a label notorious for The Social, the good times and being friends with Primal Scream, Happy Mondays and The Charlatans. It was the legendary DJ Andrew Weatherall that provided their first remix. The band might have been signed by EMI, but it was Heavenly’s founder, the mercurial Jeff Barrett, that A+R’ed them through their first two wildly successful albums. Indeed, the second of those – 2004’s ‘Silence Is Easy’ – saw them become the

Migraines ‘raise pregnancy risk’

Migraines ‘raise pregnancy risk’

Migraines substantially raise the risk of a stroke during pregnancy, a US study suggests. However, the British Medical Journal study stressed the overall risk remained low. It also linked the headaches to a raised risk of heart disease, blood clots and high blood pressure. The researchers suspect migraine puts extra stress on the body when it is already struggling with increased blood volume and heart rate.

Our study should not discourage women with migraine from considering getting pregnant
Researcher Professor Cheryl Bushnell They also suggest it may be possible that migraine itself is a sign that the cardiovascular system is not working as well as it should be. Previous research has shown the cells that form the inner wall of blood vessels, called endothelial cel

Sleep ‘influences diabetes risk’

Sleep ‘influences diabetes risk’

Burning the candle at both ends during the working week could raise a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes, New York researchers say. People who slept fewer than six hours a night were more likely to develop a condition that precedes diabetes than those sleeping for longer, they found. They said the study supported mounting evidence that cutting back on sleep can have a profound impact on health. The six-year study was presented at an American Heart Association conference. Cases of type 2 diabetes, which are often, but not always, linked to obesity, have been rising across the globe.

Chris Brown withdraws from awards

Chris Brown withdraws from awards

Singer Chris Brown has taken his name off the shortlist for Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards in the US because of the assault charge against him. The 19-year-old was arrested in Los Angeles last month after a row with his pop star girlfriend Rihanna. His spokesperson said the singer appreciated the nominations but felt “the incident last month has shifted the focus from the music”. Brown was up for both favourite male singer and song at the 28 March awards.

On-line petition

Children’s TV network Nickelodeon had received calls from parents asking for Brown to be removed from the shortlist. An online petition calling for his name to be withdrawn had drawn over 10,000 signatures by Wednesday. The case had been widely publicised after
